Before buying a coffee maker you need to consider what type of coffee you will be drinking, and how often. Prices vary depending upon the type of coffee you want to drink.
There are 3 types of coffee makers:
-
Filter -
These come in different cup volumes and are very easy to use. Water simply drips slowly through a basket of ground coffee to infuse in a pot. There’s no need to boil the water first. Filter coffee machines usually have thermos pots and hot plates to keep the coffee warm.
-
Espresso/Cappuccino - Available in two types, pump and steam machines.
On both types of machine bar pressure is an important consideration as the higher the bar pressure the better the coffee. Pump machines heat the water to the correct temperature then force it through the coffee using an internal pump. This force is more intense than a steam machine and results in a better tasting drink. The water tank can also be refilled at any time for unlimited coffee. Steam machines are less expensive than pump models. With these machines the water must come to a boil to the maximum pressure needed which means that it cannot be opened safely during use.
-
Combination Coffee Makers - Offers the flexibility to choose between filter coffee and espresso. Combination coffee makers not only brew a pot of traditional coffee but also produce espresso and cappuccino as well. These units are often slightly larger.
