When investing in a new fridge or fridge freezer, there's a lot more to choosing it than meets the eye! If you're confused about what you really need, then let us guide you through a few easy steps so that you (and your fridge) don’t loose your cool.
- What size appliance you need - You should measure the exact dimensions of the fridge as well as how much room you have to open the door outwards. The measurement inside the appliance is usually measured in cubic feet, so try to measure in this style. Attempt to estimate realistically how much space you need in the fridge and/or freezer, as any space that is not utilised can cost you money and waste energy.
- Type - The choice between a fridge with an ice box, a fridge freezer or a larder fridge is easily resolved when you think about how much food your family needs, and if you eat more fresh than frozen or vice versa. If you already have a freezer, it's worth considering a larder fridge as you will get extra storage space ordinarily taken up by the freezer compartment, if you eat mainly fresh food, then a fridge with an integral ice box will usually be enough to house your frozen produce. If you consume similar amounts of fresh and frozen, then a fridge freezer is for you.
- Energy Labels - All fridges have to be labelled with the ratio of energy consumption in relation to volume. Look out for Energy Efficiency ratings ranging from A to G, A being the most efficient. The more efficient, the more money you will save, not to mention helping the environment.
- Features - Fridges and Fridge Freezers can include many different features, which could include any or all of the following, depending on your specific needs. Anti-bacterial Coating - This coating can help improve the hygiene of your appliance, and help to prevent any bacteria growth. Auto Defrost - Basically does what it says! The appliance can be set to de-frost its-self, saving you time and effort. Racks and Shelves The fridge will have either wire ‘rack’ style shelves or glass alternatives. The glass shelves will be more efficient in holding the cold temperature, but can often be more expensive than the wire option.
- How to dispose of your old fridge freezer - You should ask your local council for details on how to dispose of your unwanted fridge/fridge freezer, as it is likely that it will contain CFC gases that can be very harmful if not destroyed in the correct manner.
