Tumble Dryers Buying Guide

We can’t all rely on the British weather to dry our clothes, which is why tumble dryers have become so popular! With the added bonus of less creasing and nice fluffy clothes you can see why more and more people are investing in dryers for their homes.

There are a number of factors to consider when purchasing a tumble dryer.

Types of dryer:

  1. Vented - A vented machine takes the damp air produced by the drying process and discharges it outside the home using a plastic hose (sometimes supplied) to prevent condensation. A permanent vent can be fitted in an outside wall or you can simply hang the hose out of an open window.

Vented machines are cheaper than condenser models and normally use less energy, but you will need to install the appliance near an outside wall or window which may not always be possible, especially if you live in a flat.

  2. Condenser - do not need venting though an outside wall and are therefore often more convenient if space is a concern. They work by turning steam created by drying clothes into moisture which is then collected in a water reservoir that can be removed and emptied when necessary or sometimes it can be pumped out via the washing machine plumbing if appropriate.

You can install a condenser dryer in any well-ventilated room, and although they're a little more expensive to run you may prefer the freedom of not having to use a hose.

Most dryers have two heat settings, as well as a reverse tumble action which means the drum rotates both ways and pauses in between, keeping the laundry separated and drying efficiently.
